The Historic Route is one of the greatest treasures of Ethiopia .Nowhere else in the world can you see riches of man’s past such as those in the northern part of Ethiopia most of them are registered by UNSCO as world heritage site. A history that stretched back to the time of prehistoric man the 5th century B.C pagan temple of Yeha, Debre Damo monastery to more than 3000 years old history of Axum with the rock Churches of Tigray just prior to their cousin in Lalibela dated back from the 6th-10th, the 12th century rock hewn churches of Lalibela, the UNSCO heritage walled city of Harar, the medieval castles of Gonder, the famous Blue Nile fall with the 13th century painting monastery of Lake Tana at Bahir Dar spectacular scenery, peoples, customs landscape Riches that cover the history of Ethiopia.

DAY 1: ADDIS ABABA

You’ll be met and escorted through the airport by your English speaking guide/driver. There may be a wait at the airport to retrieve your baggage from the airport system. Transfer to the 4* Jupiter International Hotel with two superb locations in Addis Ababa’s Kazanchise area, you’ll be within walking distance of the UNECA center. The 142 rooms are spacious and comfortable with free broadband internet and multichannel satellite television. The hotel also has a steam room, fitness center, massage, spa and sauna, a great way to relax and unwind after your long flight. You’re booked on to a half-day tour of the city to include: the National Archeological Museum of Addis Ababa and Merkato – the largest open-air market in Africa. Then drive to Mt. Entoto (3,200 meters) for a panoramic view of the capital.

  • Visitors to Ethiopia require visas. The only exceptions are nationals from Djibouti and Kenya and travellers who arrive in Addis Ababa Bole International Airport to catch a connecting flight.
  • You’ll return to Addis Ababa on your last day when we’ve scheduled a half day tour of the city and the Merkato market, including visiting the National Archaeological Museum of Addis Ababa.

DAY 2: FLY BAHIRDAR

Fly from Addis to Bahir Dar and visit the Blue Niles Falls before lunch. We’ve organized a boat trip on Ethiopia’s largest water body, Lake Tana (3,600kms) stopping off to visit the island monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret (14th Century AD) and Azwa Mariam (14th Century AD). Tonight you’ll stay at the all-inclusive Kuriftu Resort and Spa at Bahirdar on the shores of Lake Tana.

  • We’ve tried to include as many interesting stop off points as possible. If time allows you’ll visit further monasteries but you may have to cut down on those scheduled if you spend longer than expected at some sites.

DAY 3: GONDAR

Drive from Bahir Dar to Gondar – the 17th century capital of Ethiopia. In the afternoon, visit the Imperial Castle Compound of Gondar (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the ‘Bath of Emperor Fasiladas’, the church of Quskuam Mariam (17th century AD), the Residence of Empress Mintwab, and the church of Debre-Birhan Selassie which is famous for its wall and ceiling paintings. Stay tonight at the luxurious Goha Hotel in Gondar, dinner bed and breakfast.

DAY 4: AXUM

You’re booked onto a morning flight to Axum, the most ancient capital of Ethiopia followed by a sightseeing tour of the city: visit the Archaeological museum of Aksum, the famous Stele Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the church of St. Mary of Zion (believed to be the last resting place of the original Ark of the Covenant) the palace and tomb of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel (6th Century AD) and the ruined palace of the Queen of Sheba (9th Century BC). We visit the Stelae Field to see the massive granite stelae (obelisks) from 300 to 500 AD and visit the Archaeological Museum of Axum in the Northern part of thea famous Stelae Field. We also visit the Kaleba Tombs of King Kaleb and King Gebre Meskel (5th and 6th century AD) and the Orthodox Christian inscription of King Ezana (4th century), as well as palace of Queen of Sheba (9th century BC). Another highlight today is the Tsion Mariam Church housing the original Holy Ark of the Covenant, containing the Ten Commandments.

DAY 5: LALIBELA

You’re booked on another morning flight, this time flying to Lalibela – home of the12th century AD rock hewn churches of King Lalibela. After lunch visit the first group of churches of King Lalibela (UNESCO World Heritage Site). The most famous historical sites in Ethiopia, each of the 11 rock-hewn churches of King Lalibela is carved from a single block of granite. These churches were dug out of the rock bed and connected by tunnels, using immense skill and strength, many of them carved out underground! We begin by visiting the northern group of churches, including Bet Medhanealem, arguably the biggest monolithic church in the world. Bet Golgotha which houses the tomb of King Lalibela and impressive artworks is also found here (women are not permitted to enter). Other churches we see in the northern cluster include Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel and Bet Mikael. Check into the Hotel in Lalibela, you’ll stay here for 2 nights on bed and breakfast basis.

DAY 6: LALIBELA

After breakfast take a mule back ride to the hill top semi monolithic church of Asheton Maryam (13th century AD), it’s worth the climb, when you reach the top the views are fabulous! After lunch visit the remaining second and the third group of the churches of Lalibela. Then we stop for lunch and make our way to the smaller southeastern group of churches, amongst them Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanual, and Bet Abba Libanos. Our tour ends with the most famous church, Bet Giyorgis – a massive monolith dug into the earth in the shape of a Greek cross. Spend a second night at the Mountain View Hotel, again with dinner bed and breakfast included. Fly back to Addis. In the evening, you’re invited a farewell dinner party at one of Addis’ best traditional restaurants to see the folkloric dances of the Ethiopian people and to enjoy a selection of Ethiopian dishes. Fly Back to Addis Ababa and depart.
